How to Clean Anti-Reflective Coated Glasses (Without Damaging Them)
Anti-reflective (AR) coating is one of the most useful upgrades you can put on a pair of glasses — and one of the easiest to wreck with the wrong cleaner. Here's what actually damages the coating, what's safe, and how to clean AR lenses properly.
🔍 Why AR Coating Is Fragile
Anti-reflective coating is an ultra-thin film applied to the surface of the lens — often just a few molecules thick. It cuts glare and reflections, which is why it's standard on most prescription glasses now. But because it sits on top of the lens rather than being part of the glass or polycarbonate itself, it's genuinely more vulnerable to scratching, clouding, and chemical breakdown than an uncoated lens.
Most of the hazy, streaky, "my coating's degrading" complaints people bring to optometrists trace back to cleaning habits, not manufacturing defects.
🚫 What Damages the Coating
- Ammonia-based cleaners. Window cleaner and many household glass sprays contain ammonia, which breaks down AR coatings on contact. It's the single most common cause of coating damage.
- Undiluted alcohol. High-concentration isopropyl alcohol strips coatings over repeated use — it's the concentration that matters, not the presence of alcohol at all.
- Paper towel and tissues. Both are abrasive at a microscopic level. On an uncoated lens that's a minor risk; on a coated one it causes fine scratching that shows up as a permanent haze.
- Dry wiping. Wiping a lens with any dust or grit still on it drags particles across the coating like sandpaper — this applies to any cloth, including microfibre.
- Hot water. Heat can cause some coatings to craze or peel at the edges over time. Lukewarm is safe; hot isn't necessary and isn't worth the risk.

- Rinse first. Lukewarm water clears loose dust and grit before anything touches the surface — this step alone prevents most scratching.
- Use a proper lens spray, not household cleaner. Look for ammonia-free, alcohol-free or low-alcohol formulas designed specifically for optical coatings.
- Wipe with clean microfibre only. Never paper, tissue, or your shirt. Fold to a fresh section of the cloth as you go rather than dragging a dirty patch back over the lens.
- Dry with light pressure. No scrubbing — the coating doesn't need force, just a clean surface making contact.
